The National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC, IP) marked its 15th anniversary on May 25 with an institutional ceremony characterized by the recognition of partners who have played a decisive role in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in Mozambique. The event brought together several distinguished figures, including the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries and the former President of the Republic, Joaquim Alberto Chissano, highlighting the strategic importance of conservation areas for the country.
During the ceremony, ANAC recognized several organizations which, in close collaboration with the institution and in coordination with local communities, have actively contributed to the effective management of conservation areas in
Mozambique. Among them, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) was awarded a Certificate of Merit in the collaborative management category, in recognition of its continuous partnership and the impact of its work in the conservation of natural heritage.

WCS has played a central role in the co-management of the Niassa Special Reserve since 2012, one of the largest and most important conservation areas in Africa. Over this period, the organization has contributed to strengthening law enforcement, protecting wildlife, combating poaching, and implementing initiatives that promote sustainable livelihoods for local communities.

This recognition highlights the importance of the work carried out by WCS in close coordination with ANAC, contributing to the maintenance of healthy ecosystems and to the intergenerational well-being of populations that directly depend on natural resources.
By marking this milestone, ANAC reaffirmed the importance of strategic partnerships in addressing conservation challenges, recognizing that the achievements of the past 15 years are the result of joint efforts between the State, partner organizations, and communities.
The celebration of ANAC’s 15th anniversary thus represents not only a moment of recognition, but also a renewed national commitment to preserving natural heritage and building a sustainable future for the next generations.
