Essential equipment for Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) Management was recently handed over to the Rapid Response Units (RRUs) of Mecula, Marrupa, Mueda (Negomano administrative post), and Mavago districts in the Niassa National Reserve.
During a formal ceremony held on 01 December 2025 in Lichinga City, after the session of the Management Council of the Niassa Special Reserve (NSR), the district Administrators or their representatives received the HWC mitigation kits. Each of the four Rapid Response Units received:
This support significantly improves the mobility, safety, and effectiveness of the teams on the ground, enabling faster and safer interventions when elephants, lions, or other large predators threaten communities or destroy crops.
The initiative is part of the Mozambique Northern Rural Resilience Project (MozNorte), funded by the World Bank, channeled through the Biodiversity Conservation Foundation (BIOFUND), and implemented in the Niassa Special Reserve by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Mozambique in partnership with the National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC). This delivery marks another important step toward sustainable coexistence between local communities and wildlife in one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas.
