A training course was held in Maputo City on July 2-3, 2025, for technicians from the Environment Sector, namely the Provincial Environment Service (SPA), the Provincial Directorate for Territorial Development and Environment (DPDTA), and the Provincial Delegation of the National Agency for Environmental Quality Control (DPAQUA) from the southern region (Maputo, Gaza, and Inhambane) of Mozambique on the use of the Historical Vegetation Map of Mozambique and the Red List Assessment of Ecosystems.
The training was promoted by the National Directorate for Environment and Climate Change (DINAMC) in coordination with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). A key objective of this training was to provide technicians with an understanding of the importance of protecting sensitive or threatened ecosystems, how certain projects (for example, development) should not compromise key biodiversity, and the importance of integrating these sites into the district's ecological network.
The event was attended by more than 50 participants and covered topics related to the different ecosystem types, their state of conservation in the southern region of the country, and the use of tools such as the Red List and the National Biodiversity Portal (SIBMOZ) to support environmental decision-making. Additionally, the role of provincial and district institutions in nature protection was highlighted.
The training is part of the initiative “Building Biodiversity Knowledge for Action in Southern Africa: Biodiversity Assessment, Prioritization and Spatial Planning in South Africa, Malawi, Mozambique and Namibia” (also known as “SBAPP Regional Project”) which aims to strengthen biodiversity knowledge in order to inform land use planning, support decision-making and environmental policy-making.
