Mozambique has taken an important step towards expanding its marine conservation network with the completion of the process of drafting the National Strategy and Action Plan for the Expansion of the Network of Marine Conservation Areas (MPAs) and Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECMs). The initiative is aligned with global goals, including the commitment to protect at least 30% of marine areas by 2030, as established by the High Ambition Coalition, to which the country has been a signatory since 2019.
The process was concluded on May 29 during a workshop at the Montebelo Indy Village in Maputo, which brought together more than 50 representatives from government institutions, civil society, strategic partners, donors, the private sector and independent consultants.
The main objectives of the meeting were:
i. Complete the drafting of the strategy and action plan for the expansion of MPAs and OECMs;
ii. Discuss the institutional arrangements for effective implementation;
iii. Define the next steps for approval and operationalization of the strategy. During the meeting, a preliminary version of the strategy and action plan was presented, which served as the basis for the discussion. Participants contributed to strengthening the document, resulting in a robust final version.
By consolidating this strategy, Mozambique is promoting the sustainability of marine ecosystems and improving coastal communities' quality of life.
