Portucel Mozambique recently received a visit from representatives of the company Kenmare Resources. This visit aimed to understand how Portucel Mozambique includes the theme biodiversity in the development of its project.
Portucel has announced its activities to prevent potential negative impacts and ensure respect for the values of biodiversity. Communities are involved, to promote their knowledge and socio-economic development and thus contribute to a greater resilience of the environment - including agricultural areas, natural forests and other areas important in the provision of ecosystem services.
These activities include:
- Agricultural extension, focusing on conservation agriculture practices;
- The stoves save firewood;
- The beekeeping industry;
- The fish farming;
- The construction of water holes;
- The horticulture;
- The prevention of uncontrolled burning;
- And the projects of forest restoration of degraded areas, using native trees produced in the nursery of Portucel in Luá, in the Ile District.
This exchange of experiences took place in the Zambezia Province, within the framework of the COMBO Program, which Portucel and Kenmare Resources plc, as well as other entities in several African countries are implementing. This Program develops case studies on the application of the Mitigation Hierarchy of Biodiversity Impacts, in partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society Mozambique (WCS).
