This week, the second annual Mozambique Marine Biodiversity Conference opened its doors in Nacala-Porto. Organized by BIOFUND with the support of WCS Mozambique team, and a long roster of partner organizations and government agencies, the event saw of 500 in-person attendees and expert panellists and 6000 online participants from around the world and across sectors, all convening in recognition of the incredible importance of Mozambique’s marine biodiversity and urging continued ambition to conserve some of East Africa’s most important climate-resilient coral reefs, small-scale fisheries, and the livelihoods and resilience of coastal communities across the country. The Minister of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries attended the two days of the event full-time.
Importantly, WCS announced the launch of its new Blue Future website – a microsite to share news, best practices, and boost the profile of WCS Mozambique’s ambitious Blue Future initiative to create up to 7,000 km2 of a new sustainable use Marine Protected Area around the Nacala region.
