The Niassa Special Reserve (NSR) recently held an awareness campaign on bushfires aimed at raising the awareness of communities in the localities of Mecula, Mbamba, Lugenda and Naulala about the impact of uncontrolled bushfires on the daily lives of humans, and the impact of fires on biodiversity.
The campaign covered approximately 1,500 families, focusing on young people, honey collectors, children, adults and the elderly, and was carried out through door-to-door contacts, giving priority to dialogue with people about uncontrolled burning and using the method of disseminating images in poster format and their interpretation.
To achieve the objectives of this campaign, in addition to the REN environmental education team, the environmental education teams of the Carnivores of Niassa/Mariri Investimentos Project, the Guebuza Village Environmental Club, the Mariri Operator Fellows and the Luwire Community Programme were involved. It should be noted that the fire management programme at REN is supported by the United States Forest Service (USFS).
