The Society for the Conservation of Nature (WCS Mozambique) - will hold from 4 to 8 November, in Ponta de Ouro - Maputo Province, an international workshop aimed at the final evaluation of the Project “Conservation, Impact Mitigation and Biodiversity Counterbalances in Africa” (COMBO Project), for the period 2016-2019.
The COMBO Project aims to reconcile economic development with biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services and is being implemented in Mozambique through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Land, Environment and Rural Development (MITADER). It is funded by the French Development Agency (AFD), the French World Environment Fund (FFEM) and the Mava Foundation and is partnered by WCS, Forest Trends, Biotope and BIOFUND as a technical partner in Mozambique.
The COMBO Project is working with Governments, the private sector, academia, civil society and financial institutions across Mozambique, Madagascar, Uganda and Guinea supporting policies and institutional capacity aimed at improving mitigation of industry and infrastructure impacts on biodiversity. Specifically, the project will contribute by 2019 to the definition and implementation of policy on the mitigation hierarchy, including offset mechanisms, in the four countries in which private and public investments endorse the target of NNL of biodiversity while generating additional funds for conservation.
The goal of this meeting is to share experiences and exchange knowledge about the implementation of the COMBO Project in each of the participating countries and develop lessons learned for future activities.
The mission include 5 working days (4-8 Nov 2019), and a field visit to Maputo Special Reserve and Ponta do Ouro Marine Partial Reserve. The official arrival and departure days to Maputo are the 3rd and 9th of November.
To disseminate the communication about the event, WCS was invited to TVM (national TV) program "TUDO AS 10" to explain to the civil society the nature of this project and what substantial impacts it has on the country. WCS was represented by Mr. Hugo Costa, COMBO Project Director in Mozambique.
