The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Land, Environment and Rural Development, Sheila Santana Afonso, presided on 21st August at Afrin Hotel in Maputo, the official opening ceremony of the Sub-Regional Meeting of the MAB National Committees (Men and Biosphere) Africa, which runs until 23th August, under the theme "Promoting Sustainable Development Goals in Southern Africa through the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Program".
The meeting aims, among other things, to assess the degree of implementation of the MAB in member countries, share best practices and discuss thematic priorities, with a view to improving the levels of cooperation and implementation of the Lima Plan of Action in the subregion.
Mozambique is the second country hosting this kind of event after Lesotho in 2018. Administrators of the Quirimbas National Park, Niassa National Reserve, members of the Committees of the MAB countries, namely South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as AfriMAB experts and representatives are participating in the event.
The event close on Friday with a visit to the Maputo Special Reserve & Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine, and is funded by the German Government through the Ministry of Environment and has a contribution from ANAC, representing the Government of Mozambique.
