Under the Red List of Threatened Species, Identification and Mapping of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in Mozambique led by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in partnership with the National Environment Directorate (DINAB) of the Ministry of Land, Environment and Development Rural Fund, funded by USAID through the SPEED + Program, these entities will hold a training and technical workshop from June 18th to 21th, in which global assessments of endemic species of Amphibians, Reptiles, freshwater fish and butterflies will be carried out with the methodology of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), of which the Mozambican State is a member. Several national and regional experts for the different groups of fauna mentioned above are participated in the event.
These assessments will contribute to identifying threatened species and Key Biodiversity Areas so that they can inform territorial planning and decision-making programs, either by the Government or the private sector; create the basis for the adoption of a list of protected species for Mozambique; update species status data for use by the Government to report reporting to the Secretariats of International Conventions. This training will also enable the training of a group of young Mozambican professionals in this type of methodology, who in the future will be able to integrate the regional species specialist groups.
